SYNOPSIS
TW: sexual assault, death, suicide, murder
Set in Victorian England, Tess, A New Musical follows Tess Durbeyfield, a young woman from a poor rural family, who discovers her noble ancestry. This revelation leads her to the wealthy Alec D'Urberville, who lures her into a secluded meadow and sexually assaults her, resulting in a pregnancy. Shunned by her community, Tess names her son Sorrow, who dies shortly after birth.
Devastated, Tess runs away to Trantridge Dairy Farm, where she finds solace with the other dairymaids—Iz, Marian, and Rhetty. She falls in love with Angel Clare, a farmer with progressive views but rigid morals. After they marry, Tess confides in him about her past, but Angel abandons her for her “lack of virtue.”
Soon after, Tess's father unexpectedly dies, and her family faces financial collapse. Alec reappears and manipulates Tess into becoming his mistress in exchange for ensuring her family’s survival. When Angel returns, hoping to rekindle their marriage, Tess, in a final act of desperation, kills Alec to escape his control. She runs away with Angel, but is soon arrested and executed for the murder.
Told through the eyes of her best friend Iz, Tess’s journey, along with the bonds she shares with her sister and the women she befriends along the way, becomes a powerful testament to survival, injustice, and the unbreakable connection between women.
